Help bring back the autumn colour

For four years the Arrowtown community, led by the Arrowtown Choppers, has made an outstanding effort to clear wilding conifers from Arrowtown's hillsides by hand, complementing the felling and spraying work of contractors. Now it’s time to think about the next stage – planting more suitable species.

The conditions on Tobins Face are challenging for some species. That’s why the Choppers, in coordination with the Arrowtown Wilding Group (a subgroup of the Arrowtown Village Association), are undertaking a revegetation trial. A trial allows us to understand that we are planting the right trees in the right place at the right time.

To make this happen we need volunteers to plant trees and we need donations to pay for materials and native and exotic trees. We are running a community planting day on Tuesday 23 April at 10 am, when we’ll plant 400 to 500 natives. In spring we’ll have another planting day for 200 exotic trees.

This is very much a community-led project. So please join us if you can – register your interest through this Facebook event.

You can also make a donation here. These donations will cover the cost of the trees and things like tree guards, mats, stakes & fertiliser. Thank you to the early contributions from Soho Property, Akarua Arrowtown Autumn Festival and Queenstown Gardening Company.

Running the trial is an important step towards our much wider wilding strategy.
